The substrate is composed of cereal grains with optimum moisture content, sterilized by high temperature and pressure. It comes in bags or glass jars into which the culture or spores of a selected mushroom have to be introduced under aseptic conditions. The inoculated substrate has to be then incubated so the fungal mycelium completely colonizes the grains, which are used to prepare final substrate for growing mushrooms. However, some mushroom species can grow directly from the grains, so the preparation of the final substrate is not required.
