Of all the mushrooms, reishi is attributed the most medicinal properties and is ranked among the top traditional medicines. In some Far Eastern countries it is called the ÔÇśmushroom of immortalityÔÇÖ and in the Japanese book Shinnoh Honsokyo it is referred to as an ÔÇśexcellent cureÔÇÖ. It is consumed as a tea brewed from the ground fruiting bodies or as medicinal compounds purified from the mushroom in the form of tinctures and capsules.

There are several colour varieties of reishi mushroom, from yellow and orange to bright red and brown shades. Because of its glazed appearance, the mushroom has other names, such as Glossy Ganoderma or Shiny Polyporus.
